Women Who Code Awards Viking Code School Scholarship To Alice Fung

Recipient Selected Due to Desire To Mentor Others Using “Superpowers” She Learns

SAN FRANCISCO, JULY 13, 2015 - Alice Fung, a Women Who Code NYC member has been chosen to receive a full scholarship to the Viking Code School. This prestigious online program requires a 14-week commitment for a total of over 1,000 hours of coursework. Fung was chosen for this honor by WWCode due to her desire to use what she learns to support other women in the tech field, as well as her embodiment of the principles which guide the mission of the organization.

When asked about the decision to select Alice for this award, CEO of Women Who Code, Alaina Percival said, “Her application was striking to the team, because of her desire to mentor other women. She also clearly defined where our organization added value in her professional life and how we've played a role in where she is today. She embodies our mission and is the best person for the opportunity.”

In total, more than 70 women living in 10 countries around the world including India, Brazil, Quatar, Nigeria, and Greece applied for the scholarship. According to Viking Code School founder Erik Trautman, “The breadth of the applications is a clear indication of the reach that Women Who Code has achieved and that makes them a perfect partner for the Viking Code School.” He went on to say that, “We’re delighted to be able to share this opportunity with Alice, and I know that she will use the skills she learns to succeed and empower the entire community of women in technology.”

In her application, Fung referenced the WWCode Tech Talk at LinkedIn on April 7th where she heard from industry leaders including Neha Batra, Kristal Pollack, and Camille Fournier as a particularly inspiring experience in her life. “That event reinforced the strong underlying tone of community, where we freely learn from each other and support each other with our experiences.” She also noted in reference to her growing code skill set that, "I would like to continue to develop and refine my new superpowers to the best of my ability. But more importantly, I want to be a mentor and share my experiences as a contributing member of the WWCode community.”
