President Obama Recognizes the National Latino Children’s Institute (NLCI) for their leadership in empowering young Latinos across the country

As national stewards of the El Día de los Niños Congressional resolutions, the NLCI was also successful in securing resolutions in the House and Senate

Washington, DC— April 29, 2016 — The National Latino Children’s Institute (NLCI), a national organization dedicated to focusing the nation’s attention on the unique needs of Latino children received President Obama’s praise at the 19th annual kick-off event of the April 30th recognition of El Día de los Niños (Children's Day), Celebrating Young Americans.

President Obama recognized NLCI for its work to empower young Latinos across the country and helping them find their voices and contribute to our society.  The President further recognized NLCI’s stewardship on these issues and its efforts to remind the country of the role we all can play in shaping a country where all things are possible for all people. Olga Aros, Chair of NLCI , stated, “El Día de Los Niños will be celebrated throughout the nation on April 30. Thank you, President Obama, for your congratulatory letter and recognizing the stewardship and resolve of the National Latino Children’s Institute in serving as a voice of strength for young Latinos.”

Senator Bob Menéndez (NJ), a long-time supporter of NLCI and keynote speaker at the celebration stated, “When we give children a head-start, the sky is the limit. The actions we take today will determine the success of our children tomorrow”. He was recognized by the NLCI for his staunch and steadfast support in leading a bipartisan effort to recognize April 30th as El Día de los Niños.

Congresswoman Michelle Lujan Grisham (NM) introduced a similar resolution in the House of Representatives.  In remarks made on the House Floor yesterday, she committed to continuing the work started 17 years ago by other Members of Congress to recognize April 30th as El Día de los Niños, Celebrating Young Americans.

“Our continued advocacy on behalf of Latino children is critical to their well-being and the nation’s growth and prosperity.  Investing in the youngest and fastest-growing segment of the U.S. population helps ensure that that they are prepared to take their place in all aspects of American society.” Said Maria Rita Jaramillo, Co-chair of the Washington, DC event.

Celebrated in over 130 cities across the United States as well as in Latin America, El Día de los Niños is one of the most cherished Latino traditions.  Since 1999, NLCI has served as the national steward organization to recognize the day as a symbol of the country’s commitment to the well-being of Latino children. Thanks to their advocacy, the organization has garnered bipartisan support at the Congressional, Senatorial, Gubernatorial and Mayoral levels, as well as the support of the National Hispanic State Legislators Caucus (NHSLC), and the National Hispanic Leadership Agenda (NHLA).
