Suunto Launches Traverse Alpha Watch Purpose-built for Hunters and Anglers
- Written by Pitch Engine
OGDEN, Utah (April 5, 2016) — Suunto, a global leader in sports precision instruments, unveils the Traverse Alpha watch, featuring automatic shot detection, GPS/GLONASS navigation and scratch-resistance sapphire crystal glass. Available at specialty hunting and fishing retailers and online at suunto.com, the feature-rich, super durable Alpha Traverse lasts as long as the hunt takes, with a remarkable 100 hours of battery life with GPS enabled.
Handmade in Finland, the Traverse Alpha meets the toughest U.S. Military standards while offering a robust set of hunting- and fishing-specific features. Unique to Suunto, the new automatic shot recognition feature uses the integrated accelerometer to detect when a shot is fired and automatically creates a point of interest (POI) based on that location.
In addition to its integrated GPS/GLONASS route navigation, the Traverse Alpha also includes unique POI types that record important locations such as animal prints, signs of bedding, and tree stand or fishing locations to allow for easy navigation back to relevant areas. Functions including breadcrumb trail, a digital compass with tilt compensation, and FusedAlti™—a unique combination of GPS and barometric altitude—assist with navigation in unknown territory.
Using Suunto’s online mapping platform, Movescount, sportsmen can utilize detailed topographic maps featuring elevation data to accurately track shot distance and elevation, and create altitude profiles and waypoints.
A customizable red backlight, for low light situations, and vibration alerts allow users to go undetected in the backcountry.
Tested against the military standard MIL-STD-819G, Suunto designs every Traverse watch for action as well as everyday wear. The Traverse Alpha takes durability a step further with the addition of a knurled stainless steel bezel, water-repellent nylon strap and scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass.
Product Features:
• Automatic shot detection
• Red backlight
• GPS/GLONASS satellite systems
• Full route navigation with waypoint approaching alerts and breadcrumb trail
• Route preview and altitude profile
• 10 hunting-specific POI types
• Location-based moon phase calendar with moonrise and moonset times
• Barometric pressure, weather trend and storm alarm

“Seeing the popularity of Suunto watches among anglers and hunters and noting that very few watches in the market address their specific needs, we decided to reach out to them with a dedicated product,” explains Petteri Hernelahti, Suunto’s outdoor business line manager. “True to Suunto’s heritage, the Traverse Alpha watches combine rugged design with unique features such as shot recognition to create the most advanced watch for fishing and hunting.”
As part of the Suunto Traverse collection, the Alpha is sleek, stylish and comfortable. It is compatible with the Suunto Movescount App for Android and iPhone, enabling automatic uploads of the day's activities and easy adjustments while away from a computer. Two color alternatives are available: the black Traverse Alpha Stealth and gray/green Traverse Alpha Foliage.
The Suunto Traverse Alpha will be available in the U.S. beginning April 19, 2016, and globally on April 29, with a suggested retail price of $569.
