5 Questions to Ask When Buying a Boat

  • Written by: News Co

Over 2 million people in Australia have a boating license. We are a nation of boaters, and if you're looking to enjoy this national past time, you need to start by buying a boat.

You don't want to go out and buy just any boat, though. There are several factors to consider. This guide will give you five questions that you should ask before you purchase a boat.

1. What Will You Use the Boat For?

Once you decide you want to buy a boat, you need to think about what you want to use the boat for. Not all boats are ideal for all activities. Some boats are meant for sailing, cruising, fishing, and water sports.

Make a list of your planned activities so that you can look for a boat that fits your lifestyle. This could be a boat with a cabin for overnight trips. Or it could be one with plenty of deck space and seating for entertaining.

2. What Size Boat Will Be Ideal?

The size of the boat you purchase will dictate how many people you can comfortably and safely take with you. A larger boat will be able to carry more people and gear.

However, the larger the boat, the more fuel it will consume. This will make it more expensive to run. It will also be more expensive to maintain.

The bigger the vessel, the more experience you should have to be able to operate it safely.

3. What Condition Should the Boat be In?

One of the most important questions to ask when buying a used boat is what condition you are willing to accept. Everyone automatically says they want a like-new boat. However, you may find yourself balancing your expectations with your budget.

4. What Is Your Budget for Buying a Boat?

When determining your budget, you need to consider both the initial purchase price and the upkeep costs. It will do you no good to buy a boat that you can't afford to maintain. There are some common costs you should include in your budget.

Maintenance
Repairs
Operating
Marina fees
Storage
Licensing and Classes

Try to use a boat broker to get you the best deal. They will know where to buy a boat that will fit your budget because they handle boat sales of varying size, condition, and value.

5. What Features Do You Need?

Create two lists of what to look for when buying a canal boat or any boat that you like.

You'll be less likely to skip over a boat that would fit your needs. You'll also be less likely to outspend your budget on features that you don't really need.

Start the Boat Buying Process

With these five questions, you'll be better prepared to buy a boat. Start by doing the prep work of preparing your want and need lists. Then determine your purchase and owning budgets.

With this information in hand, you're ready to get out there and start shopping.
