CERES Fair Food leading the charge in ethical groceries and sustainable household

  • Written by Diane Falzon

Established in 2011, and as a local social enterprise organisation in Melbourne, CERES Fair Food is leading the charge in creating positive outcomes for their community.

CERES Fair Food, as part of CERES, is a popular ethical online grocery and takes meticulous care in handpicking the ideal products they offer to their customers.

They pride themselves in selling a suite of certified organic and biodynamic groceries and household products, free of pesticides, herbicides and artificial fertilisers. They also support Victorian farmers, grocery makers and suppliers, joining forces with them all year round, paying fair prices for their produce.

Organic fruit and vegetables are sourced locally as much as possible, including CERES Joe's market garden in Brunswick. However, the demand also allows CERES to buy directly from organic farmers in Victoria, as well as other states for specific produce such as bananas and mangoes.

New migrants and asylum seekers are employed by CERES, with profits going towards teaching kids and adults how to take care of our much-loved planet through many of their onsite programs and community environmental park. This includes facilitating closed-loop packaging cycles where possible, collaborating with producers to return, refill and reuse - to minimise the packing waste.

For more than four years, CERES has stocked a number of Biogone’s landfill- biodegradable and home compostable products, including cling wrap, dog waste bags, resealable bags and bin liners.

Landfill-biodegradable plastic products will biodegrade in a landfill approximately 90+% faster than conventional plastic, producing a humus-like material (organic matter) which is a natural plant fertiliser and no micoplastics.

The home compost range is certified in accordance with Australian/NZ home compostable standard AS5810 and made with plant-based materials. The products can be disposed of in a home compost (depending on the contents), commercial compost facility (if the waste stream is available) or landfill where they will biodegrade.

If either plastic ends up in landfill the methane produced from accelerated biodegradation will be captured within the timeframe the landfill is actively managed and can be captured for fuel and energy production - waste to energy.. Rather than being slowly released into the atmosphere over hundreds of years after the landfill has closed.

According to Chris Ennis, General Manager, Ceres Fair Food, Biogone continues to be a welcomed addition to their range with demand for Biogone’s products on the rise.

“We have seen more customers purchase products such as the Biogone cling wrap and the dog waste bags, while they purchase their organic fruit and vegetables and other household items from our online store. It does not take long for small acts of purchasing landfill-biodegradable products by customers to collectively create a bigger impact for the environment.”

According to Dr Ross Headifen, co-founder, Biogone, CERES Fair Food is an ideal customer for Biogone.

“CERES Fair Food has been on the sustainability road for a long time with a wide following of people who are mindful of their purchases and their impact on the environment.  Many people are looking for alternative products that allow them to do their shopping or help them out in the kitchen without leaving a string of waste products that will last 100’s of years.”
