The displacement or the number of cylinders are not sufficient to define the engine power. There are, for example, four-cylinder in-line engines with a displacement of 1,600 cubic centimetres, which have an output of around 100 hp. These are usually older models. On the other hand, newer units use the latest technology to produce 150 hp or more. Therefore, when choosing the motor, you should not only look at the size but above all, consider the performance. In addition to the horsepower rating, there is a power rating in kW. Both values are closely related, so you can convert the units into the other.

The importance of horsepower

The term "horsepower" is also used in modern vehicles. However, its meaning is outdated. A PS is a performance specification that defines work in connection with a unit of time. It is the power that is required to lift a weight of 75 kilograms by a total of one meter in a period of one second. If this definition is applied to a vehicle that is moving on the road, a weight of 150 kilograms is moved. The performance data are based on the loads that a horse can transport.

If you drive a car that has an output of 100 hp, you can imagine that you will be pulled by 100 horses. However, this idea is not correct because 100 horses can pull a heavy load together. But you will never reach a speed of 150 kilometres an hour or more. However, this is possible with a 100 hp engine. In 1978, due to these irritations, a new power unit for engines was introduced: the kilowatt. However, since this unit alone could not prevail, today you will find both details in the technical data of a vehicle.

The relationship between horsepower and kW

The horsepower can be expressed by converting it into kilowatts. There is a simple calculation for this: one kilowatt corresponds to 1.36 hp. The manufacturer specifies what the engine actually has. The basis for this definition is the revolutions that it is able to perform in a specified period. The maximum torque that the engine can deliver to the crankshaft during continuous operation is measured. The power of the motor can be calculated from this. For many car buyers, engine performance is very important.

Most people see the power of a vehicle solely by the numbers given in horsepower (HP) or kW. Everyone automatically estimates a vehicle with 350 PS faster than a vehicle with 110 PS. However, this assessment is somewhat wrong. Because most tractors, trucks and tractors have much more power than passenger cars in terms of kilowatts. You do not achieve rapid speed because it is more important which transmission is installed in the vehicle and which purpose the engine power is to serve. Because a tractor should move large loads and should have a lot of power between the ground and the wheel. A car, on the other hand, achieves a much higher speed with much less effort.

If you are experiencing a loss of HP in your car and it doesn’t increase no matter how many times you visit the mechanic, it may be the time to sell your car. In that case, you should contact Pacific Cash For Cars for a quick sale of your car in Sydney.
