Children playing with matches sparked the raging inferno that destroyed three Staten Island homes and seriously damaged four others, officials said Friday.
The cause of the blaze was discovered as FDNY fire marshals combed through the burned debris on Benzinger Ave. near Jersey St. in New Brighton.
The six-alarm blaze started at about 6:10 p.m. Thursday in a three-story house and quickly spread.
Within minutes, the entire roof of the house was consumed by a bright orange blaze and thick smoke.
The flames quickly jumped to the rooftops of neighboring houses on either side.
In all, 21 people, 17 of them firefighters, suffered injuries, most of them minor, officials said. One civilian and one firefighter suffered serious injuries that weren’t considered life-threatening.Send a Letter to the Editor
