Will Braces Soon Be a Thing of the Past? This Dentist Thinks So!

  • Written by Daily Bulletin

With traditional braces costing Australians anywhere from $6,000 to $9,000, alternative teeth straightening methods are becoming increasingly popular. One stand-out alternative is Invisalign, a hassle-free option offering the perfect smile without needing to wear braces for years.

One of the most popular and effective orthodontic treatment plans in the world, Invisalign has 9 million users worldwide. With results evident from as little as 12 weeks, it’s easy to see why Invisalign’s popularity is on the rise.  Dr. Minoo Ghamari, an award-winning principal dentist at Gorgeous Smiles Dental, believes that traditional braces will soon be dead. See why below.

Cost Efficiency

On average, Australians can expect to fork out upwards of $6,000 (at a minimum) for traditional metal braces. With the rising cost of living, those looking to cut unnecessary costs are turning their attention to Invisalign, which can often be less than half the cost of traditional braces. Dr Minoo says that while the price varies depending on everyone’s needs, the cost of Invisalign can begin at $1,800 for simple treatment plans at Gorgeous Smiles Dental.

Eating Ease

The convenience of being able to eat whatever you want throughout the teeth-aligning process is invaluable. Dr. Minoo says Invisalign users can say goodbye to the traditional rules of no apples and no chewing gum, as there are no brackets to break or for food to get stuck in between. With Invisalign, you don’t need to change what you eat or how you eat it; users can simply remove their aligners during meals, before brushing and flossing and easily pop them back in.

Keeping Teeth Clean is Easier

It’s been proven that keeping your teeth clean is much easier when using Invisalign compared to traditional braces. Along with removing Invisalign aligners when eating and drinking, users also take them out when it comes to brushing and flossing each morning and night. With nothing attached to your teeth, you’re able to brush and clean your teeth as you always have.

Fewer Appointments

The best part of choosing Invisalign is that fewer consultations between patients and orthodontists are required. Dr. Minoo explains that much of an orthodontist’s work is completed before you even receive your aligners. The custom-made aligners are created using a 3D scan of your teeth, and once you receive them, there’s no need to visit your dental clinic as often as you would when wearing braces for regular adjustments and follow-up appointments. Visits are kept to a minimum for progress check-ins, which Dr. Minoo says makes Invisalign a great option for those suffering from odontophobia.

Comfort is Key

Those that have had traditional braces will be familiar with the pain that comes along with them. The initial ache and pain, once braces are placed, is just the beginning, with discomfort continuing every time they’re tightened. On top of this, the wires commonly slice away at and cut gums and cheeks, making it an excruciating process.

Dr. Minoo advises that while Invisalign still comes with some minor discomfort, as expected when teeth are shifting, Invisalign aligners are crafted using specially made plastic and are custom fitted to your mouth. This means there is no monthly tightening causing aches and pains, or wires slicing the inside of your mouth.

While it is important to note Invisalign can’t do everything braces can, they are a great alternative option for simple aligning needs. Dr. Minoo says it’s important to check in with a reputable dental provider about your options to ensure you’re making an informed choice.
